The City of Dothan’s
initiated a study of an 850 acre urbanized drainage basin, which
included industrial, institutional, commercial, agricultural, and
residential developments within the basin, as well as undeveloped
property. The purpose of the study was to identify drainage problem
areas within the basin and to recommend improvements in order to
alleviate known and potential flooding situations. The stormwater
basin was modeled using Pond Pack Version 8 software (Haestad Methods)
and included many existing detention ponds, channels, culverts and
three large ponds, each having different and multiple outlet
structures. The entire basin had to be modeled from its upper reaches
to its lower discharge point so that any recommended improvements
would not create additional problems downstream.
