Wallace Community
College located in Dothan, Alabama had to close it Health Education
Building due to uncontrollable mold problems associated with the
building’s existing HVAC system.
After Polyengineering personnel
inspected the building, the HVAC system, and the original design plans
for the building they recognized that the design strategy used with
the old HVAC system in the building could lend itself to improper
humidity control.
Polyengineering personnel determined in lieu of multiple fan-coil
units serving different zones of the building, the existing air-cooled
chiller should be used in conjunction with one variable-volume
chilled-water air handling unit to provide temperature and humidity
control to multiple zones throughout the building.
The new system entailed much larger ductwork than had originally been
in place creating some interesting design problems relating to the
ceiling plenum depth. The college also requested that the new system
included a desiccant wheel in the air handler for enhanced humidity
control. The air handler furnished was a custom designed desiccant
wheel unit unique to this project.
