The leaders of Abbeville United
Methodist Church recognized a need for a Family Life Center to meet
the needs of a growing congregation. Our firm was hired to begin
conceptual drawings that focused prominently on the east elevation of
the church. The client wanted the new Family Life Center to maintain
the same architectural style and detailing as the original church. The
original sanctuary, built in 1896, was the inspiration for the
exterior facade and detailing of the new addition. The Family Life
Center exterior repeats the ornate brick work, cornices, wood trim,
moldings, stained glass windows and matching dormers that give the
original structure its architectural appeal.
The new Family Life Center includes a full service kitchen and a
multi-purpose room/auditorium for dining and large assemblies. The
auditorium, with a non-working stage, will be used by the Church for
programs and special events and will also be made available for
community functions. Even though the new Family Life Center is a
larger assembly space than the existing sanctuary, the scale of the
front facade clearly maintains the existing church as the focal point
while adding height to juxtapose the steeple. The construction which
is wood trusses, steel bar joists, steel beams, brick and block
bearing walls with gypsum board interior finish also repeats the
architectural elements found in the original sanctuary building.
